Tree stand safety

Tree stand safetyIt is very important that I set out some basic tree stand safety guidelines for those with which tree stand safety is not familiar. There is no reason to take risks when being safe simple.

Here are our suggestions for tree stand safety:

I will provide your tree stand safety guidelines in the most basic terms things you should do and things you should not do.

Always:

There is essential hunting gear to be worn at all times. A (FAS) fall-arrest system and/or a full body harness that meets TMA standards is a must have for anyone who is concerned about tree stand safety.

The FAS gear should be worn even during your ascent to and descent from your tree-stand.

The criteria required for tree stand safety has changed, however. For example: single strap belts and chest harnesses have been declared insufficient Fall-Arrest devices, newer, improved harnesses are a necessity. Failure to use an FAS recommended harness is very dangerous.

Read and understand the warnings and instructions included by the manufacturer before using your tree stand each season.

  • The manufacturers include this information because it is the best way to practice tree stand safety with their product.
  • Hunting merchandise such as a tree stand will come in different styles, builds, etc. so never ignore the warning labels
  • Inspect any tree stand equipment and the Fall-Arrest System gear for signs of wear or damage.
  • Be sure to practice in your Full Body Harness, learning what it feels like to hang suspended in it before you go on your hunting adventure. This is not only a great idea, but also a necessity.
  • Try to have someone to go with you each time.
  • Have emergency signal devices such as cell phones, walkie-talkies, signal flares etc.
  • Check weather conditions before and during your hunting experience.

Another great rule to follow when practicing tree stand safety is to use a haul line for the purpose of lifting your gear and your unloaded weapon to your tree stand.

Never:

  1. Do not use homemade stands or make modifications to a tree stand without the manufacturer's consent.
  2. Do not be in a hurry.
  3. Always use slow, even motion when practicing tree stand safety. Make movements of no more than ten to twelve inches at a time.
  4. Have proper contact with the tree and/or tree stand every time when you are practicing tree stand safety correctly.
